The following is taken from Chapter 8 of The Memoirs of William Milne, which I edited and republished in October of 2024 for the first time in nearly 200 years.
CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE PREACHING
March 10th, 1811
Remember, O my soul, that thou art now to plead the cause of Christ, therefore be fervent.
Remember, that some who shall hear me today will, perhaps, be in heaven or hell before another opportunity, therefore be faithful.
Some are remarkably ignorant, therefore be very plain.
Some are captious (ie, tending to find fault), therefore be cautious.
Some, perhaps, are beginning (ie, novices in the faith), tried, tempted, desponding, etc, therefore seek to direct them.
What if I never preach again, therefore be as serious as if I were to go from the pulpit to my bed of death.
